With all the releases of Dragon Quest coming out I have pretty much been Dragon Quest crazy. I love the series and I can’t seem to get enough even if it’s from the bad spin offs. Today we will not be talking about any spin offs, we are going to be talking about my favorite RPG of all time, Dragon Quest IV (remake). It is also known as Dragon Warrior 4 and was first released in 1992 in North America.
To be honest I’ve seen RPG’s with fancy graphics and complex level and battle systems that by today’s standard make DQ4 look a little old and clunky. I will also agree with the people that talk about it and I accept that by today’s standards DQ4 is old school. However it is the only RPG that I have finished six times. I can also tell you right now that I will probably replay it in the future as well.
Well I’m going to keep this sort because all I can really say about Dragon Quest 4 is that it is awesome.
The story is great and the game is composed of 6 stories in total. Chapter six is new and I found it added to game and made what I originally thought was wonderful even more wonderful. As far as he story is concerned it is better in the remake. So if you do intend on playing the DS version the game is not over after chapter 5.
The music is my favorite of all the DQ title. I guess I can put it as a tie with DQ1 but either way the classically composed sound track is brilliant.
The game play is old school but I always find the fact that you can switch between 8 character in battle useful in strategy on the bosses. I enjoy the old school game play and it really work here since DQ4 is driven by the story.
Once I got into the thick of it the DQ4 remake almost felt like a different game from the original and with the addition of chapter 6 it really felt like a different story at the end of it all. I’m really glad that Square/Enix released this. It bought back a lot of great memories and it to an amazing game and made it even batter.
I recommend this to any RPG fans that enjoy RPG’s that are story driven and character driven. It does not have a character customization system and you can only manipulate stats through the use of rare seeds found through out the game. This RPG is more about collecting the rare items and learning more about your quests and characters. If you are new to Dragon Quest I really recomend Dragon Quest IV, it has a good balance.
