From the Abyss

September 6th, 2009

Now here is a fast pase hack and slash that was actually a lot of fun on the DS. I really didn’t know anything about this game before playing it. I picked it up simply because I had nothing else to play at the time. The story and game concepts are pretty recycled. Start in a town with a dungeon and go to the “Abyss” to kill monsters , go back to town to buy upgrades and fight the next boss. Nothing new and nothing special. The game play is quite fun however the weapon balance does nothing to make the game more interesting, Bows and axes are to slow and I never saw any reason to switch away from basic sword attacks. I must also mention that the town interface s horrible it’s pretty much a menu system and you cannot equip items without having you go to the abyss which will leave two extra items to annoy your inventory or at the very least give you an unnecessary trip to and from town.

The most interesting mechanic of the game is the soul steal spell which allows you to take abilities from monsters and use them as your own. Sound fun hey? well lets just say you will never need any other spells then heal and the spinning sword attack. So although to get some cool spells they really don’t server a purpose as the spinning attack pretty much roll through everything.

I did say the game is a lot of fun which is true but I did complete everything in under eight hours so the fun doesn’t really last long.

If you are really bored I can suggest this as a rental but don’t expect anything too special I still enjoyed Izuna much more and I can think of a dozen other games I would have rather played.

Rating: 5/10
