A look at “Gothic 3″

March 3rd, 2009

This is one game series that not a lot of people know about. Gothic 3 is the second game that I have played of the series, I never played part one and I have finished Gothic 2 many years ago. I have very fond memories of Gothic 2. I remember being overwhelmed by the vast size of the world, gripping plot and the many open ended choices the game left you with.

Many years later I ran across Gothic 3 bundled in a action RPG game pack that sold for only 20 dollars canadian. I remember thinking to myself that I really can’t go wrong at that price. To be frank, I really did not go wrong. Gothic 3 has turned out to be an awesome game for me. The game is set in a beautiful 3D environment where the player can roam freely and kill any animal, monster or NPC. One thing that seems to be missing from Gothic 2 is the ability to harvest plants that get you high which I found amusing. Maybe it is still in the Gothic 3 somewhere but I have not found it yet.

Another thing that seem to stand out  about Gothic is that it’s a single player RPG that has a decent crafting system, something you typically only see in MMO’s but here you can spend hours collecting herb and recipes to build potions, you can hunt animals and  make weapons. The game keeps you busy collection all sorts of things between the traveling and monster fights.

The only bad thing that I have discovered about Gothic 3 is in technical aspects of the game. It takes a long time to load and paused a lot while exploring the world. It is annoying and a few sites will post technical details that players can follow that will make life easier. I have actually followed a few guide and I do find that the game plays   better now. Technical blips always remind me of the old school world of games, at least it helps people learn a little about computers along the way, learning is good!

I still have a long ways to go in Gothic 3 and I have already lined up the games expansion to be played shortly after. Although I hear that the expansion was a nightmare due to the change up of development teams. I guess I will have to see for myself and I still can’t wait to try the expansion and Gothic4 when it is realeased.

…and for those PC gamers that have never touched the series I highly recomend Gothic the Gothic Series.
